Geckos are the collective name given to reptiles belonging to the Gekkoda infraorder. Most geckos lack eyelids excluding those belonging to the Eublepharidae family. Most geckos are nocturnal and wield a defense mechanism known as autotomy which involves losing a tail.

MorphologyEdit

Common TraitsEdit

Shedding or moltingEdit

All geckos are capable of molting skin at relatively regular intervals. Many species of geckos also consume molten skin in order to reabsorb nutrients and reduce risk of being tracked by predators.

AdhesionEdit

Although not a shared ability of all geckos, many geckos have the ability to grip steep surfaces through their specially adapted feet which have several folds to aid in traversing along or even vertical surfaces.

AutotomyEdit

Autotomy is a defensive tactic used by many species of geckos which involves losing a tail. Autotomy is generally used as a last resort defense mechanism by many geckos, as the tail is very important in fat storage in many species. Some species of geckos are capable of regrowing their tail, however regenerated tails never retain the size nor shape of the original.
